Rome beckons for Europe's elite track & field athletes

The 2024 European Athletics Championships will take place in Rome from 7-12 June. These biennial championships return to the Italian capital having last played host back in September 1974. Although it was another city in Italy that takes the accolades for hosting the first ever European championships.

Italy's Pietro Mennea stormed to 200m gold at 1974 European Championships in Rome.

In 1932, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), now World Athletics, created a special committee to explore the possibility of organising a European Championships. The following year, the IAAF Council appointed a permanent European Committee. This committee met for the first time in Budapest on 7 January 1934 and the inaugural European Athletics Championships were staged later that year in Torino.

Rome's iconic Coliseum will feature on the prizes medals.

The Stadio Olimpico will be the venue these year's championships. The stadium is located within the Foro Italico sports complex, north of the city of Rome. It is no stranger to hosting major athletics events having accommodated the 1960 Olympics, those 1974 championships and the 1987 World Athletics Championships. Rugby Union fans will recognise it as the home to the national side, the Azzurri, in the Six Nations and Autumn Internationals. It is also the venue that is shared by Serie A football rivals, AS Roma and S.S Lazio.

The iconic Stadio dei Marmi which has recently undergone a renovation will serve as the warm-up track.

The European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov was in the Italian capital recently to mark the one month to go countdown and paid tribute to those organising the championships. “Organising a European Championship in the Olympic year is a great challenge. I am sure that Roma 2024 will be an extraordinary edition in a beautiful city and in a historic stadium.”

With a newly laid track and medals unveiled the city is ready to welcome the very best athletes from across Europe, who will have one eye on the Olympics in Paris. The track & field events on the Olympic programme commence on the 1 August. That's just over seven weeks from the conclusion of the championships in Rome.
