A summer of concerts, cricket & horse racing in the North East of England, then the football returns

Without question Newcastle United’s successful 2022/23 Premier League season and qualification for the next season’s UEFA Champions League has brought much attention to the city and the region.

A £300m takeover in 2021 by the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund raised expectations that success would follow and so far so good. Despite a loss to Manchester United in the Carabao League Cup Final the famous black & stripe shirts can look forward to hosting some big European nights at St James’ Park later this year following that 4th place finish in the Premier League.

A short journey down the road their fierce rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough made the English Football League (EFL) Championship play-offs with both missing out on the chance to step up into the Premier League and re-new their rivalry with their Newcastle neighbours.

So all in all a successful season football wise for the North East of England’s top three clubs. With the Premier League fixtures now out for the 2023/24 campaign (EFL released on 22 June) all can now look forward to the new season with fans expectations no doubt raised again. The North East of England is a region described by the Visit North England as being rich in contemporary culture, historic sites, world heritage sites and dramatic landscapes, all within easy reach of Newcastle International Airport. For more information visit www.visitnortheastengland.com

As all await the big football kick-off in August the region offers other experiences with Durham's cricket ground in Chester-Le-Street hosting major concerts as well as international and domestic cricket.

The iconic complex resides under the gaze of Lumley Castle and is approximately 4 miles from the centre of historic Durham and 10 miles from Newcastle city centre. All of which are well connected by A1 road network, local & national trains as well as buses.

Highlights this summer include Rod Stewart on his summer 2023 tour. This takes place on 30 June. Then on the 19 July it's The Who's (supported by UB40’s Ali Campbell) turn to visit Durham.

Cricket wise, England’s Men take on their counterparts New Zealand in a one day IT20 match on 30 August whilst Sri Lanka Women take on England’s Women on the 9 September in an IT20 fixture too. Add all the T20 Vitality Blast fixtures where Durham play their big rivals, the Yorkshire Vikings, as well as the Derbyshire Falcons and the Birmingham Bears, it promises to be a busy summer alongside the River Wear.

Horse racing fixtures and concerts are also the order of the day at Newcastle’s racecourse. Located within the 812 acre estate of High Gosforth Park it is only 5 miles from Newcastle city centre. The racecourse has been present at High Gosforth Park since 1882 and is owned by the Arena Racing Company.

With over 60 race meetings a year, Newcastle Racecourse is one of the busiest racecourses in the UK and is a Grade 1 dual code track. Highlights this summer include the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Festival which includes a concert from multi award winner Tom Grennan on the 1 July.

This particular fixture goes back a long way in racing having first been run in 1833. The Northumberland Plate originally took place on a Wednesday and for many years the meeting was a holiday for local mine workers. The race became popularly known as the Pitmen's Derby. The meeting ceased to be a holiday in 1949 and the race was switched to a Saturday in 1952.

Later that month The Gainford Group Ladies Day on the 29 July will see Ronan Keating (below) end the day's racing with another live concert.

Roan Keating performs 'Life is a rollercoaster' live in 2022.
