The red carpet awaits athletes in Budapest at the 2023 World Athletics Championships

Did you know that the laying of the 14,000 square metres of Italian MONDO rubber covering, consisting of 700 elements, will take around 2,400 hours?

This is the task now faced by the organisers of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest as they ready the athletics track for more than 2000 competing athletes from over 215 nations. This will be the 13th time in the history of these championships that the organisers have chosen the MONDO cover, which is considered to be extremely fast. It was also used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

The last time the World Athletics Championships were hosted in Europe was back in 2017 in London where Usain Bolt competed for the last time as an individual.

Taking place between 19-27 August 2023 this will be the biggest event ever held in Hungary with a brand new state of the art stadium on the banks of the Danube River taking shape to welcome guests.

Budapest is no stranger to hosting major events. In recent times they have hosted the IHF World Championships Division 1 (2011, 2013 & 2018), the FINA World Aquatics Championships (2017 & 2022), UEFA Euro 2020, Giro d' Italia 2022 and the 2022 EHF European Men’s Handball Championships.

Balázs Németh, CEO of Budapest 2023 recently said, “The World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 will be the biggest sporting event of the year, with more than a billion spectators around the world. It is a great pleasure and a pride to be able to showcase Hungary, its magnificent historic capital and the new National Athletics Centre, which will be completed in time for the event, to this huge audience on the spot and through the broadcasts.”

Situated in the heart of Central Europe, Budapest (also called the Queen of the Danube) is easily and quickly accessible by road, rail and air from almost every major European major city. Visa information can be found here.

The capital is divided into the Buda side and the Pest side by the Danube River. On the right bank of the river the Buda Hills are situated, while on the left bank the Pest Plains stretch out. The Danube, which is Central Europe’s biggest river, traverses the capital city stretching 30 km from north to south.

A little taste of summer in Budapest.
